Selected PEAC JHS trainers, together with other teachers from the private and public schools, participated in the Curriculum Validation and Teacher Consultations organized by EDCOM II last July 10-11, 2023 at Ateneo de Manila University. The activity aimed to validate the revised K to 10 curriculum released by the Department of Education.

After the opening remarks of Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, S.J., PEAC Executive Director Rhodora Angela F. Ferrer explained to the participants the rationale of the activity. Both Director Ferrer and Fr. Nebres are members of the advisory council of EDCOM II. Dr. Karol Mark Yee, EDCOM II Executive Director, gave a brief background of EDCOM and emphasized the importance of having a realistic, implementable, and good curriculum.

Dr. Maria Therese Angeline P. Bustos, Fr. Jerome A. Marquez, SVD and Dr. Diosdado M. San Antonio, standing committee members for Basic Education, were also present during the activity. Selected PEAC certifiers also helped facilitate and document the discussions in the breakout rooms.

Day 1 of the activity focused on curriculum validation, specifically on decongestion of the curriculum, teaching-learning approaches, and language of instruction. Day 2 focused on teacher consultations on teaching and learning resources, learning recovery, measurement of learning outcomes, and school administration. The participants were grouped according to their specialization to discuss issues, share their fears, hopes, and personal experiences that would help the commission understand their realities as educators.

The Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) was created by Republic Act 11899 to undertake a three-year comprehensive national assessment and evaluation of the Philippine education sector’s performance and recommend legislation to address the education crisis in the country in the next three years.
